Keep Soil Covered
Don Bustos and his family have farmed with the acequia system in Santa Cruz, New Mexico for 400 years. This deep connection to the land has taught him many lessons about soil and water stewardship. He considers himself a temporary manager of the farm and cares for the soil with the next 24 generations in mind. Don and his family incorporate cover crops, flowers for pollinators, perennials, and time-tested gravity-fed irrigation to grow in harmony with nature.
The New Mexico Healthy Soil Working Group and the New Mexico Department of Agriculture Healthy Soil Program provide resources and grants to farmers to help them care for their soil. Learn more at NMsoil.com.
